Besides celebrating Raya or Aidilfitri if you will, I am lucky enough to experience two other yearly celebrations celebrated widely here in Malaysia. The first one is Chinese New Year, thanks to my hubby B, who's half Chinese. Every year, during Chinese New Year, we actually do make that trip to visit B's Chinese relatives, where we also participate in the ang pow (money in a red envelope or packet) giving custom, which usually means Mariuca is broke around this time! ;)
Yesterday was the Deepavali or Diwali celebration. Also known as the "Festival of Lights", Deepavali is celebrated by Hindus around the world, to mark the victory of good over evil. This is the second celebration I was referring to earlier, one that I've been "celebrating" since I was a little girl. And now that B is married to yours truly, he too celebrates with me and my family. Some of you might not know this but my grandmother (bless her soul) was married to my grandfather who hailed from India. So though we don't go out of our way to really celebrate this colourful occasion in its true definition, my mom still carries on the tradition of cooking a special family lunch or dinner every Deepavali.

So that's how I celebrated Deepavali yesterday, having lunch at my parents' home. This year my mom cooked tomato rice, which happens to be one of my favourite dishes from her. Everything was yummy and as I helped myself to 2nd servings, that diet I've been meaning to start became a mere distant memory on my to-do list! ;)

Though we would have much preferred our 3-day Deepavali weekend to be less hectic, there's just too many things to do now that we're married. Our weekend was quite busy with visits to the in-laws, grocery shopping, meeting friends for dinner and before we knew it, it's already Tuesday and B has to go back to work in a couple of hours. Lucky for me though, I work from home so my working hours can be pretty much be determined by my boss, which is ME of course!
So instead of waking up early to get dressed for work and braving the traffic to get to the office, I'll still be nicely snuggled up in bed. If previously, I'd be busy planning an event with the rest of my colleagues in the Corporate Communications department, today will see me enjoying a nice afternoon break while going over my schedule for the day. Instead of busy making calls discussing trade show exhibits, table covers, table top display and all that jazz in ensuring a successful event for my former employer, I'll be happily fiddling around on my laptop working on MY own stuff, at MY own pace and time and in MY home office. Oh yes, I definitely love my life as a freelance copywriter working from home! ;)
I hope it's not too late to wish all my Hindu friends here and around the globe a Happy Deepavali. And to those returning to work today, have a great day at the office! :)

«Oldest ‹Older 401 – 502 of 502 Newer› Newest»I experienced Deepavali for the first time when I was in Singapore in September of 2006. It was such a colorful and amazing festival. I love the street decorations.
Hi Mariuca.
It´s good to participate in your family´s traditions and make them live. I like knowing about different traditions, gotta check which chinese year is next.
Cheers.
thanks for the tomato rice, marzie! :)
am dropping off TGB here! ;) Hv a nice day! :)
Crikey folks!! Grandy is somehow still holding on to the #2 spot.
And with a mere day (or 2 because Grandy is never sure of the time change) left in the competition.
Look at LJ....MEOW little kitty!! You are up to the #4 slot.
You have definitely gained some ground, Miss Slow & Steady. ;)
Debbie is still holding on to the #1 slot with 329 comments.
And Wonderful RIZAL is still in #3 with 269.
Doesn't that sound funny? Amazing really...someone left 269 comments in 30 days. REALLY??
And we know it to be more than that because of the whole, spilling out of the bucket thing.
You rememember...when everyone was getting bumped off the list because of the great comment flood of 2008.
Several comments so far...and no Debbs yet.
Could it be? She is finally sleeping??
YooooooooooooooooooooooHooooooooooooooooooooo!!!! Debbie!!
Wakey wakey...Rise and Shine!!
Make your bed, then come make mine!!!
It's so sad the way Grandy has to entertain herself.
I would have never survived as an only child.
You all are doing great!!
Keep up the great work!!
But Grandy really wants to see her ostrich but over in that pic over there. ;)
How fun would that be?? :)
Okay...maybe just more fun for Grandy than the rest of you. But still, you must admit my Functional Shmunctional pic is fun.
Not the Grandy pic for the comments. That's just from when we went to Mexico last year.
I use it to remind myself of the following...
A) My new camera rocks and I MUST remember to take it with me places.
And B) I want to travel more with my family.
Hi Grandy! :)
WTF? Debbie? Are you SERIOUS??
Surprise! I'm here! :)
Woman...you're almost like a stalker!
Did you hear me calling you?
Dang! I was too loud with my yoohoo wasn't I?
I won't let you talk to yourself, Grandy. :) How are you today?
You're spooky lady...you know that??
I'm great! Fixin' to go meet my Mom for lunch and visiting.
After I finish folding laundry & mopping the floor.
Since the surgery my house has...well...suffered a bit.
You're doing an awesome job too, keeping your spot here, Grandy.
Lol!!! Grandy you're always cute and funny. I just love your expressions.
::feeling a little defeated::
I just refreshed after making like 30 comments here and I'm still holding the same 319 number.
Lol! Maybe I AM kinda like a stalker.
The people I work with call my sayings, "Maryisms".
I think I should patent the phrase "Grandyisms"
Yeah you're a stalker...but it's amazing!!
You always come in when I'm on.
Here in the states we've got 3 letters to handle something like that.
T. R. O.
Temporary
Restraining
Order
HAHAHA!! I love ya Debbs!! You know I am kidding.
Oh I hate mopping the floor.
Oh Maryisms sound so...spiritual and mythical! :)
Me too!! I actually have to be leaving to get on that.
And Grandyism sounds so...uhmmm...GRAND, majestic!
I'm always late everything so I have to get going.
Oh no you're not gonna put a restraining order on me are you, sweet Grandy? :)
No restraining order for you, dear Debbie!!
NEVAH!!!!
I just processed 4 orders at my craft store today. Yeeha!! I asked God for at least 2 customers this month, and He did gave me more than 2!
I gotta get running (or walking quickly) now.
I know you're kidding, Grandy. :)
CONGRATULATIONS!!! Praise the LORD!!
You know what? I haven't sleep since last night.
{{HUGS}} Debbie!!
I just took a short nap earlier.
Holy Macaroni!! Get some sleep woman!!
Oh so technically I DID sleep, oops!
Get some sleep...eat some protein... and I'll go so you can do that.
Peace Out Lady!!
I'm sleepy now, though. Gonna turn in soon.
I stayed up all night tweaking my Craft blog. You should have a look, it's no longer pink and purple. :):)
Thanks, Grandy! Yay!! (((HUGS)))
Take care Grandy! :) Cya later.
Ooh! Looks like you are from a "rojak" family, and further complicate things by marrying another "rojak". Haha! Well, that makes you truly Malaysian! : )
It's always better to be your own boss than work for others, right? Less stress and you dictate your own hours. And can blog while work from home. It's a dream job! : )
Btw, something wrong with Entrecard website. Could not log in, sorry can't drop on your widget.
Anyone else is here? Just checking. hehe
I like going to Deepavali open houses. They usually very considerate in making sure that the foods are all halal and good to eat by all the races. I could sense their unity! Open house is a good tradition :)
My parents unfortunately rarely do open house. At least not every year. But when we did, it will be huge like a wedding. LOL.. Seriously. Many people stop by our house and asking whether this is a wedding or just an open house. Hehe
Penatlah nak buat open house every year. My mum ar paling kesian. Nak layan tetamu lagi, need to make sure the house is ready and so much more.. Huhu
Hi HaaziQ!
