A few days ago, I was busy working in my home-office, when I heard a loud noise coming from our living room. It sounded like broken glass and my first thought was that our fluffy friends had knocked down one of our table lamps or picture frames. This has happened before so I took my time to finish translating one more paragraph before heading out into the living room to see what the commotion was all about.
What greeted me was totally unexpected and I think my jaw dropped open in disbelief for a full 10 seconds at the sight in the living room. Apparently, one of the hanging lamps in our living room fell from the ceiling, right onto the hard floor, narrowly missing our coffee table and shattered into a million tiny pieces - all over my coffee table, TV rack, carpet, sofa and everything else nearby!

Apparently, one of the hanging lamps in our living room fell from the ceiling, right onto the hard floor, narrowly missing our coffee table and shattered into a million tiny pieces - all over my coffee table, TV rack, carpet, sofa and everything else nearby!
Can you see the tiny pieces of glass embedded into my small carpet in the living room? Imagine how hard it was for me to remove them! I must have stared at the mess in my living room for a full minute before looking up at the ceiling. The chain that was holding the light was broken in two, which was how the lamp fell crashing down to the floor! Our three cats were just as shocked as I was. In fact, Phoebe was totally taken aback by the loud noise and immediately ran to hide!
After my initial shock subsided, I quickly put the kids inside their kitty condo (LJ and Sushi, now you can finally see my kitty condo!) as they were all very curious and were hanging around the coffee table, sniffing the broken glass. Although all three kids were none too happy at being locked up for the rest of the afternoon, I am really thankful that the lamp didn't fall on any of my cats, especially since they love lounging on the coffee table!
I spent the rest of that afternoon sweeping, vacuuming and mopping the entire living room, which I can tell you, was neither fun nor easy. I had to be really careful not to get myself cut in the process of removing all the teeny-weeny glass pieces that were strewn all over my living room.
We now have to start checking out new lamps to replace the broken one. The lamps in my living-room came in a pair and now, the other one, which is still hanging from the other end of the living room, looks really weird on its own. We're also worried about the other lamp; fearing that it might share the same fate as the first one. I'm especially worried because that area is where B's piano is located together with his work station. What if the other lamp decides to break and fall crashing to the floor while he's there?
Right now, we're contemplating getting a contractor or handyman to come over and bring down the other lamp, better to be safe than sorry right? The thing is, we seriously doubt any handyman will agree to come by just for the sake of removing that one lamp down from the ceiling since it's not worth the time or effort. We would need to give him more things to do, which basically means we need to do some major shopping soon! I know it's only Monday but it seems that I already have our weekend nicely planned out. All I have to do now is inform B of my plans and hope he agrees! ;)

just curious- what do you translate? :) Phoebe into hiding is so absolutely cute- I could just imagine how shocked she must have been. That's horrible. How can the chain break into 2?? Rusted? old? or just not strong enough? very dangerous, god forbid, but if it happens in my house and when the 2 kids are playing in the living room, it's very much a scary thought!
my god- cleaning those tiny bits of glass must be hell! be extra careful to make sure there's no hidden pieces embedded in the rug.
and yes, it's a good idea to remove the other one too- first because it might also break and secondly, because it doesn't match with the coming new one. oh, another reason: we love IKEA! LOL

Marzie!! I'm so shocked to read this! That was scarily dangerous! Lucky you and the cats are safe!! Better replace both lampu since dah not so nice the other lampu sorang2 hanging there. Find lamps without chain, I think it's better for safety purpose.
Good Gosh! Good thing no one was hurt in the incident. And lucky your little kitties were not in the way of that falling lamp. I'll bet it was that no good genie king trying to steal more lamps for his magic lamp collection that caused it ... LOL!

Oh that time I was working on my Annual Report project. I had to translate the entire thing from Eng to BM, tu yg sibuk semacam these past few weeks. Actually even before my Bandung trip dah start work on this project. ;)
Oh yeah, Phoebe was shocked, so cute and kesian at the same time. Good thing her brothers quickly came to her rescue and comforted her LOL!!
The light is not old, cause we bought it less than 3 years ago, when we moved in here. But the chain that was holding the lampu, broke in half, dunno why!!! And good thing I wasn't happily lazing around on the sofa, or not for sure kena I sikit! Thank god yeah?

the same thing happened to me in our dining room a couple of months ago....and the heavy glass shade fell down and hit our glass dining room table and smashed to smithereens..
I was about 2 feet away and the glass landed all around me...
we were all so lucky that we weren't sitting at the table!!
it seems the builders 'forgot' to screw the fittings in properly...

Hi ECL! Fluffball is Phoebe's new nickname LOL! Most Persians are expensive, mixed Persians are slightly cheaper. I got Phoebe for slightly under RM1000. Initially, she was priced at RM1300, but of course we bargained la he he...so got her for slightly cheaper.
She eats Royal Canin only. And wet food of course. But Friskies and Whiskas are a no-no, according to most vets, for Persians that is. We try to send her for grooming whenever she gets too comot, maybe every month or so.
I can't wait for u to get a cute Persian kitty!!! I tell u, they are stress relievers la! Just hug one of my cats and all my stress will disappear! :):):)

Hi Marzie! It may take me a while to catch up on all your posts. Sounds like that lamp wasn't installed properly. I once had a ceiling fan with lights fall on me when I was young, but it didn't hurt me. I was living in Texas at the time and a small earthquake had caused it.
I'm glad your kitties are safe! That condo they have is so cool!
