Spicy Sambal Prawns!

Aside from cat fur and dust, another thing that can trigger off a sinus attack for me is seafood! When I first discovered that I'm suffering from sinus, the doctor told me specifically to avoid seafood whenever possible, which is difficult for me seeing that I love seafood, especially prawns. I love all sorts of prawn dishes, especially butter prawns and sambal prawns.

I've always had a problem cooking prawns though; they never seem to turn out right. Either they come out totally yummy or completely otherwise! But yesterday, it was a public holiday and I decided to have another go at my sambal prawns and this time around, I have to say that my sambal prawns turned out perfectly and delicious too! In fact, B even complimented me on this dish, saying that this was the best sambal prawns I've cooked so far, so yay me!

Our only other dish for lunch yesterday was telur masin or salted eggs, which went really well with the sambal prawns. My vegetable-cooking skills aren't too great either, so that's why you hardly see me featuring any vege dishes here. Anyway, since the sambal prawns was a success, I'd like to share them with you here. What do you think of Mariuca's sambal prawns? I must warn you though that they're extra spicy!

Enjoy and have a great weekend! :)

LadyJava March 21, 2008 5:40 PM

heheh... hah apa lagi.. makan lahh..lolzzz! Eh I suggest you better take note of what you did differently so you can duplicate it next time..

Mariuca March 21, 2008 5:46 PM

Oh now I really feel like masakan Melayu tonight! And since it's too late to cook (he he!), I must think of a good place for dinner tonight! Thing is, I don't really know what I did different this time, except that I just fried/simmer the sambal longer than usual. ;)

LadyJava March 21, 2008 5:51 PM

Oh yes GP! That is key.. you must tumis the sambal till the gravy really masak otherwise you feel taste the mentahness of the sambal even when it is fully cooked.. You MUST and I stressed MUST do this... sambal garing.. then only you put your other ingredients.. this is the same for sambal goreng too.. ok!

Mariuca March 21, 2008 5:58 PM

LJ, you sound just like me! I too don't like the mentah taste and sometimes, when we eat outside, we can really taste that mentahness in the sambal! I usually goreng lama, cuma this time extra lama. Sambal is my specialty but only prawns got problems so far, rest all ok. Hopefully after this, my sambal prawns will turn out just as yummy as this one lolz... ;)

LadyJava March 21, 2008 6:01 PM

InsyAllah.. must really try your sambal one of these days lahh..lolzz

Mariuca March 21, 2008 6:06 PM

God willing, of course! You must try my sambal one day, I think u will like it he he... and I must try ur sambal goreng too! Dah bertahun tak makan ok? ;)

Gelombang Rakyat March 21, 2008 6:38 PM

Mariuca March 22, 2008 3:06 AM

Anonymous,  March 22, 2008 9:38 AM

Hi Mariuca,
That prawn sambal really look delicious and I love it too but like you said, it is bad for sinusitis. Usually I have an immediate effect on my nose after eating prawns.

J@n!ce March 22, 2008 10:06 AM

Marzie, 2 of my sis have the sinus like you. I din know that prawn is one of the culprit. They love prawns. I think I better alert them. Your sambal prawns looks so spicy to me. I cant really take spicy food. I will show it to my hubs. He loves chilli.... anything HOT !! :)

FL Sam March 22, 2008 10:51 AM

Wow! Mariuca Can Cook. The sambal prawn looks so delicious. Happy weekend. :)

Mariuca March 22, 2008 1:14 PM

Ish Zubli, mana blh makan nasi dengan coffee? He he.. Nasib baik no petai, or not...lolz... :)

Tak habis mengundi lagi ke ?

Mariuca March 22, 2008 1:15 PM

Hi Hazel, thanks for the awards, yay! Have a good weekend to you too! :)

Mariuca March 22, 2008 1:19 PM

Hola Zunnur, welcome to Mariuca's blog! Oh u too got sinus problem yeah? I make sure my pills are around if I wanna eat seafood. Happy to meet another prawn lover with sinus prob lol! :)

Mariuca March 22, 2008 1:21 PM

Hi Janice! Prawns and other seafood do trigger off sinusitis for most sufferers like me, but what to do since i love prawns mah! He he.. anyway, hope ur hubby will like this spicy dish of mine yay! :)

Mariuca March 22, 2008 1:22 PM

He he thank u Uncle Sam, hopefully one day u can taste my prawns and not just view it here! Happy weekend to u too. :)

Farah Deen March 22, 2008 3:49 PM

Gulp! I just swallowed my saliva looking at your sambal udang! they look soooo delicious! I am a fan of sambal tumis udang too, and that with rice, and boiled egg would fill my tummy like anything! btw GP, letak petai jugak ke? i dont eat petai, and can't stand it's smell. but my sis and mom love the taste of sambal yg ada petai, however they dont eat the petai!

my hubby has sinus too- BAD ONE! and yes, avoid seafood, and no to belacan! totally a fat big no. :) but sambal is not sambal anymore without a pinch of belacan kan?

NafaSg March 22, 2008 4:47 PM

Yummy....sambal prawns....

Yeah LJ is right! Sambal prawns complement with sayur lemak. Shiok! =)=)=)

emilayusof March 22, 2008 6:07 PM

Ish! Ish! Meleleh air liur!

Mariuca March 22, 2008 9:00 PM

Hi Farah! Yay, enjoy my sambal ok? He he... Oh definitely no petai in my sambal tumis, I too don't really like the smell.

I'm sure ur hubby is taking medication for his sinus prob right? I love sambal belacan on its own as ulam, but not dalam sambal tumis actually, so my sambal memang tak letak belacan! :)

Mariuca March 22, 2008 9:01 PM

Hey NAFA, looks like you, LJ and I share the same taste in food! I love anything lemak actually! :)

Mariuca March 22, 2008 9:02 PM

How Emila? Can the sambal udang spoil ur diet or are u still going strong? ;)

LadyJava March 22, 2008 9:42 PM

GP! Yeah. anything lemak rocks woman.. ish teringat lak ketam masak lemak my mommy!....lolzzz.. and sambal pecal... wahh.. i want my mommmy!!!

Mariuca March 23, 2008 2:45 AM

LJ! I love fish masak lemak as well and sambal pecal must be pekat baru best! Oh, I'm not too good with fish either lolz.. :)

Mariuca March 23, 2008 4:59 AM

Hi Fida, hope u're having a good weeknd! :)

Farah Deen March 23, 2008 7:21 PM

GP, yeah your sambal looks yummy even after food, i mean, if that was in front of me now, i could eat another plate kot?? hahahahah my hubby is not taking any medicine for sinus, but he doesn't eat a lot of things which aggravates his sinus. oh, can join the 'i hate petai' club la kan?

fyi, i dont eat belacan too, i could throw up there and then!can't stand the smell at all. LOL so, even in my home, our sambal is without belacan though my mom and sis loves sambal tumis with belacan. if they put belacan in, then, i wont even go near it.

Bobby Revell March 23, 2008 8:17 PM

One big plate of delicious prawns please Chef Marze...hehe! Extra spicy is good for me, that would be perfect! Yummy:):):)

Mariuca March 23, 2008 9:52 PM

He he, thanks Farah! Your hubby is disciplined enuff to jaga makan, unlike me, hence the pills! ;)

Eh, belacan also I can't take actually. It's def not good for my sinus so I don't go out of my way looking for it, just makan kalau ada. Best kan sambal tumis without belacan and petai? That's 2 more things we have in common Farah lolz... :)

Mariuca March 23, 2008 9:54 PM

One large extra spicy Mariuca prawns coming up Bobby, thanks for ordering! Don't cry now from all the chili he he!! :)

The prawns look good unfortunately I'm totally allergic to prawns la.

I can eat all other seafood except prawns. If I do eat them my throat will itch and expand and I'll die! LOL! Well, not so dramatic as that but prawns is a real no-no for me ...

Elara March 24, 2008 12:45 AM

Wah, it's past midnight and I am hungry...again! Your sambal udang nampak sangat sedap. Next time cook with less oil. =) I have sambal recipe too. I did share it in my blog about a year ago. =) Sambal ikan bilis. I LOVE prawns! =) And petai..hehehe

Nessa March 24, 2008 11:20 AM
