Sinus No More

Some of you might already know that I suffer from sinus problems. Although I am currently on medication for this medical condition, I still need to avoid certain things that can trigger off a sinus attack including seafood (which I love!), cat fur or dust. Let me tell you that it is not a pretty sight whenever I get one of my attacks! My eyes get all puffy and watery, my nose turns red and I end up sneezing non-stop, for hours on end! I can go through an entire box of tissue in less than an hour and this will continue for several days sometimes.

Living with 3 adorable cats however means constantly ensuring a clean and fur-free environment. I try to vacuum as often as possible but that alone is insufficient as I still do get the occasional sinus attack. My cats also have their own cosy homes, which I keep clean. However, they still need to come out ever so often to stretch their legs and run around for several hours during the day and night. That is when they decide to run wild and chase each other, running around the condo, climbing all over our furniture and wrestling each other… all the while leaving trails of fur behind them!

Chubbs cat-napping on B's piano

Benji's favourite spot for some R&R is on top of our table

And lil' Phoebe loves exploring every nook and cranny!

As much as I love my cats, I still need to find a way to keep my sinus attacks at bay. The thought of keeping my cats locked up in their homes 24/7 to avoid the unhealthy dust bunnies they cause is simply unbearable, which is why I have decided to get a Hunter Humidifier for our home instead. A Hunter Humidifier will increase the indoor air quality by removing allergens and dust particles from my home. This in turn will definitely help deter my sinus attacks! I hope that investing in a Hunter Humidifier will ensure my kitties the continued freedom to roam around freely while their Master gets to enjoy a cleaner, healthier and sinus-free environment!

Wow Marzie...I didn't know u had sinus problems...me too! I hope ur humidifier helps. Maybe a good air cleaner (an air ionizer) could help too! Phoebe is looking as cute as ever!!!!!!hehehe:)

London Blogger January 08, 2008 9:17 PM

That must be so tough to have cats you love which can trigger sinus problems for yourself.
When my daughter was young she had similar problems and we used a air purifier. It was actually a rather large contraption, but it worked really well. Unfortunatly it has been long enough I cannot remember a brand name to help you out.

J@n!ce January 08, 2008 9:19 PM

Marzie, our humidifier broke down recently. Send it for repair still under warranty. The service house charged us S$15 for the spoilt adaptor & din even check if we wanna go ahead with the change or not. I'm gg down tmr to see what I can demand from him... very angry lah !! :(

Mariuca January 08, 2008 11:15 PM

I do la Bobby, and it gets kinda bad sometimes. Seriously gonna get myself a humidifier and perhaps the ionizer u suggested!

He he he, thanks for the Phoebe compliment! :):):)

Mariuca January 08, 2008 11:30 PM

Hello London Blogger! Welcome to Mariuca's blog. :)

Oh it is definitely tough balancing my love for my cats and the need for better breathable environment for me. I hope the humidifier will help my problem and thanks for sharing ur story here! :):):)

Mariuca January 08, 2008 11:32 PM

Jan! You go girl! Lolz...yeah, u shld go there and throw a tantrum ... they shld have checked with u first abt the change, regardless how small the amount you had to pay! ;)

Ratu Syura January 09, 2008 4:19 AM

Oh gosh...I'm exactly like that too! In fact, I'm having an attack right this minute and I've been sneezing the whole day! That's why I can't have cats. I wonder how you do it! Hehehe...

Nessa January 09, 2008 7:33 AM

You have sinus probs and yet you own 3 cats? Oh dear... you must adore those cats, such sacrifice!

I guess I'm lucky I don't have any allergies. I love cats too but I just don't have the patience to take care of them :$

Adrian January 09, 2008 1:48 PM

Chubbs looks cool in in his SWAT tshirt!! Now he can join the SWAT Cats cartoon!! LOL

Must be really difficult to have a sinus problem and cats shedding all over the place...to avoid breathing in all that fur you should probably get a Darth Vader type mask! LOL Darth Mariuca you'll be called hehehe

Cheers GP!!

PS Where is LJ?? She disappeared didn't she!

kimfei January 09, 2008 2:20 PM

i think i should get that also...haha...i also having same problem just like you, just that my case is not that serious after listen to yours..
take care..

Mariuca January 09, 2008 4:21 PM

Hey Syura! Well, I try to avoid breathing in the cat fur whenever I clean the house, and I also have my pills. Actifed is da best so far but it really makes u drowsy. :):):)

Mariuca January 09, 2008 4:23 PM

Nessa! You're so lucky la don have allergies. My problem dah lama dah but it's still under reasonable control. Even before I was married I had cats. At one point I had like 10 kittens living in my room, it was a cat farm I tell you ha ha ha!! :):):)

Mariuca January 09, 2008 4:26 PM

Oh yeah Chubbs looks so cute in his SWAT tee! We got the Liverpool tee for Phoebe, only had in her size and she looks adorable in it too! :)

Hey actually I am using the face mask when I clean up my house, nowadays la. It does help and I can vacuum and clean the litter box without getting a sinus attack. The humidifier will be an extra precaution to avoid the sneeze attack, hate it when that happens. Tiring you know to be sneezing non stop! :(

Mariuca January 09, 2008 4:27 PM

Oh u too got sinus prob?? Yeah la Kim Fei, I think u shld get a humidifier too. I dunno why I didn't think of it earlier lolz!! ;)

Nick Phillips January 09, 2008 5:25 PM

You know Marzie, ever since the first day I've been visiting your blog and everytime you post pictures of your cats, they always seem to be in some lazy, sleepy, comfy pose. Don't they do anything else except sleep? LOL!

Hmmm, come to think of it, that sounds like something I would do ... LOL!

Raghav January 10, 2008 1:41 AM

Gud to have a Air Humidifier....
but i don't how how effective it will be in removing the fur's....
it will surely remove stale air & other dirt..
but.... FUR???????

why don't u try... Homeopathy medication.... if will surely work...

a simple indian home medication is to take 5 pcs(tooth) of garlic early in the morning....bite & chew it well... if u feel tht there will be a harsh smell.
u can.... fry them a bit with a little bit of oil & have it in empty stomach...
the formation of sinus will get curbed....

also try to eat... rose petals....(in india u get some thing called as gulkandh)....
made of rose petals..
eating 2 spoon per day...
will also be effective....
try if u can get them in u'r nearly indian neighbourhood....

try this for atleast a fort night...
& see the difference....
this should not be had.... when u'r having sinus..
but u have to take it as a precautionery measure & it will surely work out...

Take care.
Have a good health.

3 cats! ur cats are lovely and cute. hope u get well from ur sinus problem

WaterLearner January 10, 2008 2:38 PM

My husband has chronic sinus and a little cough as well. If he doesn't have enough sleep or rest, it gets worse.

Mariuca January 10, 2008 3:46 PM

LOL!!! Where got sleeping all the time la Nick? Actually that's the best time to take their pics, so they don't move around he he he...And hey, my cats and u share the same sleeping hobby lolz!! ;)

Mariuca January 10, 2008 3:49 PM

Hi Raghav, thanks for coming by!
Actually, the humidifier is not to remove fur. If u read my post properly, you'd see that my intent is to remove the dust particles and allergens also contributed by my cats, that's what I meant. ;)

Thanks for the tips. I think I'll go for the rose petals and not the garlic he he he! :):):)

Mariuca January 10, 2008 3:52 PM

Yay LJ is back!! Always miss u when u're MIA la woman he he he...

Oh yeah, I love this tee on Chubbs, Phoebe punya is Liverpool tee lolz!

I've tried zyrtec before but actifed still works better for me, it's stronger I guess. Have a nice stay at ur ILs, hope to see u back and running soon! :):):)

Mariuca January 10, 2008 3:53 PM

Thanks Hazel! My cats are adorable aren't they? Lolz.... Always nice to see u here Hazel, hope u're having a good day! :):):)

Mariuca January 10, 2008 3:55 PM

Hola Karen! Oh thanks for sharing woman! I too can get a sinus attack sometimes from stress or lack of rest! Hope ur hubby is taking meds like me. :):):)

Raghav January 10, 2008 5:05 PM

u can also try one of this...
have a nilgiri oil(malaysian).... put few drops in not boling water tht u'r going to use for bath.....
if possible take few breath's of the steam....
so tht the sinus clog will get removed.
aslo if u take bath with tht water..
u will feel better...

Azmiel January 11, 2008 5:01 PM

You can try this to healing your sinus, Just take depth breath, hold your breath till your lounge warm (around 7-10 second). than release your breath trought your mouth. Do this as much you want.

Best Regards

Hi Marzie,
Hope your sinus soon clears...I use menthol crystals, only a tiny amount in a facial steamer and it works wonders :)

Both hubby and I have a sinus problem. Your cats are looking as gorgeous as ever. I LOVE Phoebe!

LadyJava January 12, 2008 11:42 AM

actifed? hmm tak pernah dengar pulak.. does it make you feel dehydrated as zytec does??

None of my kitties can wear baju. They are all naked...heheheh

Mariuca January 12, 2008 1:14 PM

Hello Azmi, welcome to Mariuca's blog! Thanks so much for the tip, another sinus remedy for me. Have a great weekend! :):):)

Mariuca January 12, 2008 1:29 PM

Colin! Yay, thanks for another great sinus remedy. I've tried the menthol crystals once or twice and it did help clear my sinus prob for that moment in time. perhaps I should do it more often.

Oh and thanks for the tag, don't apologize, I will surely come over ur site to check out the tag! :):):)

Mariuca January 12, 2008 1:32 PM

Lol!! I love Phoebe too Amber ha ha ha...she's really adorable cause she's still small in size, so she'll always be my lil' baby cat! :):):)

Oh both of u and hubby got sinus huh? I really hate the sneezing bit the most, it gets tiring when u start sneezing non stop for hours without a break! Makes me wanna scream sometimes and it really puts me in a bad mood! :(

Mariuca January 12, 2008 1:35 PM

Yay LJ is here today!! LJ, actifed doesn make u feel dehydrated but it makes u very drowsy, that's why I'm to take it at night only. I tell u, the effect is immediate...you can't help but nod off. I once took it before watching a midnight movie at the cinema and I had the most difficult time staying awake to watch the movie...slept halfway through lol....

Ala comelnye ur cats tak leh pakai baju. LJ, u shld ask ur hubby to help u. Satu org pegang kucing, satu org pakaikan baju!! :):):)

LadyJava January 12, 2008 1:49 PM

Perhaps I should try it then... coz zytec very dehydrating lahh... ehehe.. i think even with both of us holding the kitties.. they still wont have it on for long...lolzzzz....

Mariuca January 12, 2008 11:50 PM

LJ, nevermind, sekejap pun it would be so cute to see them running around like humans in their tees lolz!! ;)

LadyJava January 13, 2008 1:52 PM
