Cooking With Mariuca

Hello and welcome to Mariuca's kitchen! Today I will be featuring one of my favourite dishes - Rojak. I hope there are some Rojak fans out there and for my international readers, maybe after this lesson, you'll know a little bit more about one of Malaysia's famous dishes.

Rojak means a mixture of many different things. A local favourite among Malaysians, Rojak is typically a spicy salad of fruits and vegetables mixed with sticky sweet savoury sauce.
Rojak comes in many types - Malay Rojak, Fruit Rojak, Penang Rojak, Indian Rojak, Rojak with cuttlefish and so on. Whatever type of Rojak you choose, it is the sauce or paste that either makes or breaks this tasty delight. Rojak paste is made from prawn paste, mixed with some water, sugar and lime juice. For those who like it spicy, chilli paste is added to the paste when making Rojak. I prefer my Rojak sauce thick and gooey...and of course, the spicier, the better! :)

We recently discovered a stall at IKANO, which makes the best Fruit Rojak with Sotong (Cuttlefish) so I bought a pack to demonstrate right here in my kitchen, the simple way to make your own Rojak at home. ;)

Fresh pineapple, cucumber, sweet turnip, green mango, green guava cut into small pieces

Pour thick and tasty Rojak sauce over the cut fruits

Add in the chili paste. Remember, the spicier, the yummier! ;)

Okay next is my favourite part of the whole Rojak dish - the crunchy prawn crackers and tasty sotong! We usually ask for an extra pack of each. Go ahead and break those into the mixture as well. Lastly, add pounded roasted ground nuts and mix everything using a wooden spoon. Mix well until all the ingredients are covered with thick, sweet and spicy rojak sauce. Sprinkle some more nuts for garnishing and there you have it, a delicious plate of Fruit Rojak with Sotong. Suitable for a snack or a meal, Rojak is delicious any time of the day or night. Bon apetit! :)

Mariuca August 04, 2008 8:57 PM

Hi Apple! You can easily make ur own rojak if u have the Rojak paste! Get creative and add in some other stuff if u like. I don't like papaya in my rojak though. ;)

Mariuca August 04, 2008 8:59 PM

Wah makan pecal nampaknye Rizal! I like that too, but once in a while je la.

Tak pernah try rojak dengan sotong? Oh then u must!! It is really YUMMY (and fattening he he!) and if u like it HOT, this one does the job, enjoy! :):):)

Jean Chia aka Ms.Yummy~licious August 05, 2008 11:33 AM

yumm.. i love rojak buah!! usually me & mart will ask for extra prawn crackers too!! sometimes, we order only the prawn crackers. haha... it was yummy.. the rojak sauce with peanuts crunch on crispy prawn crackers!! yummy~licious! :)

i love cuttlefish in rojak too! but we seldom get that, so now i know IKANO have one. :) Thanks for sharing, woman! It surely gets me energized to fix up my mess!! >< Come and read about it at AGP!

Sushi August 05, 2008 12:49 PM

Really interesting dish Marzie!
Lots of different flavors going on. I'm curious and Mama is too. She needs to go to a Malaysian restaurant in town and order the Rojak because I don't think she can find all the ingredients to make it at home. She'll order mild, because if she eats spicy food she'll have belly ache :(
Thanks for sharing this!Woof!

Bobby Revell August 05, 2008 1:21 PM

Hi Marzie! I finally have a new post up and am rested. I've never eated anything like this, but I bet I would like it...especially if it's spicy. It looks wonderful and I am soooo hungry!!!

Tina August 05, 2008 5:56 PM

Hola dearie! Am here to vote for you! Guess what? Colin said, "The fella selling cendoi ah?" Selling cendol..hehe..nampaknya my hajat kesampaian la within this week. If not, I'll make my own rojak lah! Slurrpss! :)

Anonymous,  August 05, 2008 8:30 PM

Wow, Mariuca, Rojak looks like a yummy dish...I may have to try it in my Roxiticus Desperate Kitchen!

Whew, time flies when we're at the beach, sorry I didn't get a chance to comment yesterday...though I did check out the tasty food and drop off my EC every day, but I must have missed once since I haven't been back in your top droppers in a long time.

My sister (aka Aunt Veg) has been visiting but leaves later today, maybe that will free up some blogosphere time for me...

Roxy

eastcoastlife August 05, 2008 8:31 PM

I love rojak too but have never had prawn crackers in rojak. hmmmm... I should try.

Just voted you in BOTB. Good luck.

Anonymous,  August 05, 2008 9:05 PM

Vote, vote, vote...I got the last vote and you won! Congratulations, Genie Princess!

Roxy

Mariuca August 05, 2008 9:23 PM

Hi Sushi, I hope Mama will be able to taste rojak, is there a Malaysian restaurant nearby? Yeah, that's the best way, have it served to u all ready so u don't have to make it yourself. Having said that, this dish is really to make once u have all the ingredients! Happy eating! MEOW! :):):)

Mariuca August 05, 2008 9:24 PM

Yay I made Bobby hungry he he!! You're adventurous Bobby, am sure u will find this tasty, let me know if u ever come across rojak at your place ok? ;)

Mariuca August 05, 2008 9:26 PM

He he he Tina!!! I didn't actually "cook" this, more like bought it from the store and just chuck everything in a bowl and mix it all up till it's thick and gooey! Not much cooking involved LOL, but hey there are some things I can cook really well! ;)

Mariuca August 05, 2008 9:27 PM

Helloooooo Canny Granny! Welcome to Mariuca's blog and you're just in time too cause I'm serving rojak today, enjoy! :):):)

Mariuca August 05, 2008 9:29 PM

Debbie! He he dah takde la the Uncle kat Bangsar I guess! Make a trip to Ikano, DJ, Uptown or TTDI, maybe can try the rojak there. All nice but only the one kat Ikano got sotong, and that's ur fave mah! ;)

Yay, thanks for voting dear, I WON! :):):)

Mariuca August 05, 2008 9:34 PM

Hi Roxy!! Thanks dear, and yes it is really tasty! It's best if u can find the Rojak sauce instead of making ur own. You could try checking out an Asian grocery store for the ingredients. YUM!

I'm sharing some of ur fun at the beach through ur posts, and it seems the fun never ends! When are u going back to work? ;)

Oh thanks so much for the vote and I did WIN! I just checked Botb but didn't see any Roxy battles there. :):):)

Mariuca August 05, 2008 9:36 PM

Oh u too voted for me ECL, thanks so much sweetie!! And all my voters brought me luck tonight cause I won he he! :)

What? Sure or not never tried with crackers? Oh u must then cause that's the best part! Without it, the fruit rojak will just taste biasa. Enjoy some rojak for lunch tomo okay? ;)

LadyJava August 06, 2008 10:41 AM

hehe.. ehh don't use them lah.. really hate that pop up thing..

Mariuca August 06, 2008 10:50 AM

Oh don worry LJ, I am not using SW for now. Mainly because I don need any additional program slowing down my blog. I am using the EC Toolbar however. :)

LadyJava August 06, 2008 10:55 AM

is the toolbar good? I can't install coz tak der FF3 lagi :(.. can can't install FF3 lagi coz some plugin that i use tak support FF3 lagi lah :(

Mariuca August 06, 2008 11:05 AM

It's all good except they don't have (or I can't seem to find it) a button for cards you've not dropped on (previous dates) in ur Inbox. Cause sometimes I need to drop on my previous day droppers, you see. The toolbar allows u to drop on those in ur Inbox (1 or 10 at a time) but it takes u to the blogs who drop on u today, rather than previous days. Other than that, it is kinda cool la! :):):)

Am using FF3 but still haven figured out what plugin Im missing for my NNang ads, still can't see them at my blog. ;)

LadyJava August 06, 2008 11:12 AM

I guess won't be using the toolbar any time soon lah... not sure also why you're not seeing your NN ads.. perhaps you got it block or something ?

Mariuca August 06, 2008 11:19 AM

Hmmm, don think so. Nothing is currently blocked the last time I checked. Takpe, I'll just wait and hopefully I can see my ads again soon, almost 2 months oredi waiting! ;)

LadyJava August 06, 2008 11:22 AM

heheh..ok... eh oklah.. i nak kasi mandi Aggie... looks like a nice hot day for the kitties shower...

Good day to U too ...Ya lah I'm also here...I always pray that today is better then yesterday.Every morning I will ask my self "What really really really I want today" ..then I answer to my self...

Farah Deen August 06, 2008 1:36 PM

what a coincidence! just last Sunday we had home made rojak. Actually, my mom and sis went to my aunty's place and they took like 2 full bags of mempelam muda there. Apparently, the tress was bearing way too much fruits and they are like falling on the road. so, of course, we took 2 bags full and next day, bought pineapple and sengkuang too. Just like you described, everything in without the crackers though! :) I love lots of pineapple and jambu air with my rojak!

Anonymous,  August 06, 2008 1:51 PM

Dropping and experimenting here too dearie...

Nessa August 06, 2008 3:02 PM

Aduh Marzie! See, you made me drool like crazy already!! Looks yummy :D

I especially love the sotong strips, used to buy those though they're quite pricey kan. I love my rojak with extra nuts, with less chili of course... hehe

ellen August 06, 2008 5:50 PM

I think u told me abt BE, but u can reapply right? I also want to reapply for MPG, maybe we can do it together! AGP and MPG together-gether like that he he! :):):)

Mariuca August 07, 2008 2:51 PM

Sushi August 08, 2008 12:31 PM

Hey Marzie, the restaurant that Mama found is called Penang but it's quite far. She looked at the menu and they have all kinds of food but Rojak :( She found Roti though... Maybe she has to go back to Malaysia and try the real one :)

Mariuca August 08, 2008 3:46 PM

Hi LJ, I've been sleeping late and waking up early to do work la. Stress again sekarang ni, got more stuff to do this weekend. :(

Eh ye ke takde rojak buah in Sing? Sure or not???

Mariuca August 08, 2008 3:47 PM

Yay, thanks for coming by NAFA! I hope u enjoyed the rojak, it's spicy but u guys just love that right? :):):)

Mariuca August 08, 2008 3:50 PM

MEOW Sushi!

Oh I'm surprised they don't have Penang Rojak, esp since the shop is called Penang! That's like a speciality in Penang. Anyway, Mama must be referring to roti canai! That's like a favourite breakfast item here, Mama should try it too. It's yummy but I'm kinda bored with it already he he! ;)

LadyJava August 08, 2008 4:44 PM

GP! When i left 8 years ago, rojak buah tak der lagi.. those times yg I balik kadang2 tu tak pernah mommy mentioned as well so tak tau lerr if now have ...hehhe.

Mariuca August 09, 2008 12:56 PM

Wah takde rojak buah 8 years ago, that is still interesting to know LJ! And wow, it's been 8 years since u left Sing to be with ur darling A, syabas LJ! :):):)

LadyJava August 09, 2008 12:58 PM

yeah GP!! 8 years.. very fast.. tak rasa pun tau... am loving my life now that's for sure!!.. now to get my mommy to be with me.. that's a challenge..hehe

Mariuca August 09, 2008 1:03 PM

Wahhhh seriously? U mean get ur mom to move here, but will she leave Sing and all her frens behind? That is a challenge indeed! Good luck dearie! :)

LadyJava August 09, 2008 1:06 PM

That's why it is a challenge.. she's been saying that she would join me soon.. but still not date.. the last time was when she said she reached 60 ..ini dah nak masuk 61! lolz..

Oh well.. as long as she's healthy I don't mind.. it's when she's sick or not well yg tak syiok when I hear you know..

Mariuca August 09, 2008 1:08 PM

Of course, totally understand. But nasib baik, Sing is not that far, even though it's a whole different country. And u seem to go back pretty often too, so that helps as well. I think she will eventually retire in M'sia kut, but her heart is still in Sing for now. :)

LadyJava August 09, 2008 1:12 PM

Yeah.. all her family is there... and she's so enjoying her independence.. which would be sort of taken away here..so I totally understand as well..

We'll see...

Mariuca August 09, 2008 1:15 PM

Of course of course, let's hope for the best. So long as she is happy then everything is still okay! :)

LadyJava August 09, 2008 1:19 PM

Oh well.. as long as she's happy!! Am dropping my EC now.. speed is great...ttyl!!

Mariuca August 09, 2008 2:15 PM

Ok dearie, ttyl! Am going out soon myself. :)

Anonymous,  August 11, 2008 10:59 AM

ooh.. you're killing me with those mouth watering Rojak! i love it and miss it since school days.. the sg ones just don't have the oomph! they also don't put green mangoes which is the best part!

Mariuca August 11, 2008 5:05 PM

Ha ha! Hello Constance! Oh ye ke Sing rojak doesn't put the green mangoes? That is def one of the best parts of rojak, I hope u get to find one really soon he he! Or else, hop over to M'sia for a quick bite! :):):)

SF August 12, 2008 5:55 AM

Mariuca August 14, 2008 10:21 AM

Oh the van sounds interesting, esp since it's nearby. Maybe I'll have it on Friday, kalau ada lagi la. Thanks for the tip woman! :):):)
